We take great pleasure in announcing that Mulalley has successfully upheld its carbon neutral standing for the eighth consecutive year. In order to mitigate unavoidable residual carbon emissions, Mulalley has lent support to five international projects aimed at reducing global emissions to a degree surpassing the company’s own emissions.
Once again, Mulalley has undergone a rigorous and independent evaluation of its carbon emissions, conducted by Carbon Footprint Ltd. We are committed to sustainability and environmental preservation, and addressing climate challenge remains a pressing concern for us. This is demonstrated through our commitment to achieve Net Zero by 2050 for our operational emissions, transitioning to renewable energy to power our head office and construction sites, and continually improving our environmental performance. This aligns with Mulalley’s ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 certifications, our adherence to the ESOS (Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme) and SECR (Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting), as well as our dedication to the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS).
Over the span of time since our baseline year (2016/17), our total carbon emissions have seen a considerable reduction of 33.3%. When measured against tonnes of CO2 per £ million in turnover to account for the extent of our activities, this reduction amounts to 47.1%. Our reporting encompasses all business operations within greenhouse gas (GHG) Scopes 1 and 2, along with some elements of scope 3.
The designated projects for carbon offsetting have all received international certification and are in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which strive for a more sustainable and improved future for all. Of particular relevance to Mulalley and our core values are goals pertaining to climate action, decent work and economic growth, as well as good health and well-being. This year’s endeavours contribute to Mulalley’s cumulative carbon offset of 1,130 tonnes of CO2e culminating in an overall total of 11,735 tonnes over the past eight years. Beyond their local and global environmental advantages, these initiatives also yield social and economic benefits for the communities they impact.
Dr Wendy Buckley, Client Director at Carbon Footprint Ltd. said: “We are delighted to see Mulalley’s year on year progress, continuing to be a leader in construction with its compelling emission reductions within its own operations. Mulalley also continues to support vital carbon offsetting programmes across the world; this beyond value chain mitigation is vital to helping meet global climate change targets and net zero.”
Mulalley CEO Eamon O’Malley said “We are proud to have maintained our carbon neutral status for an eighth year in a row, which highlights our long-standing commitment. We will continue working to reduce our carbon footprint and overall environmental impact as a company”.
The five chosen carbon offset projects are as follows:(with additional UK and Kenya tree planting also being supported)
Promoting Improved Cooking Practices in Nigeria:
This project activity involves replacement of inefficient and highly dangerous cooking with more efficient and safe Toyola cooking stokes. The aim is to empower low income communities by providing efficient, affordable cookstoves which require less fuel, making them cheaper to run, emitting far less carbon dioxide and improving health outcomes for the community. This contributes to a more sustainable future.
Zoba Anseba Community Safe Water Project:
This is a clean water project that uses borehole technology to provide clean and safe drinking water to hundreds of households in in Eritrea, East Africa. By enabling the provision of a reliable source of clean water, this means the community do not need to boil water for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. This in turn means they no longer need to burn wood on inefficient three stone fires to purify the water and so a reduction in the carbon emissions, as well as a social benefit.
Reforestation of degraded land India:
The project is developed by Mangalam Timber Products Limited (MTPL) and consists of carbon sequestration of degraded land through reforestation activities. The aims are to transform 14,969 hectares of once degraded land which was hampered by soil erosion turning it into a wasteland, and planting forests to enable the soils to regenerate, enhance biodiversity and sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Jingyuan County 100 MW Solar Power Generation:
The purpose of this project is to generate electricity using renewable solar energy in China, replacing energy previously generated by highly polluting fossil fuels such as coal fired power stations. This generates high green house gas emissions reductions. During the first 10 year crediting period on this scheme, an estimated 1,285,890 tCO2 emissions have been saved.
Planting of trees the UK:
We are contributing to a UK tree planting project where native trees such as Oak, Cherry, Hazel, Birch and Maple are planted across the country to improve the aesthetic, enhance biodiversity and sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere during their life cycle.
Brascarbon Methane Recovery, Brazil:
This project mitigates and recovers animal effluent related gas by improving the Animal Waste Management System practices in Brazil which is a highly polluting practice. This is because it emits a highly potent greenhouse gas, methane which has 25 times more warming potential as a greenhouse gas then carbon dioxide. Not only this but the way in which animal waste is being stored and transported, pollutes the surrounding environment contaminating land and water. This project creates anaerobic digesters so the animal waste can be turned into biogas, to be turned to carbon dioxide and burnt or used to generate electricity. Both with a much lower climate impact.
Planting of trees in Kenya:
In Kenya’s Great Rift Valley there is a large reforestation scheme which has planted 200,000 trees, and rehabilitated 160 hectares of land. This improves the health of the ecosystem, restoring it’s ability to provide ecosystem services like water catchment to local people. It also provides livelihoods for the locals in and around the valley and focuses on empowering women in the community who make up over 50% of the team.
