A Decade of Carbon Neutrality

We are delighted to announce that Mulalley is officially celebrating a decade of being carbon neutral!

Our carbon accounting journey began in 2015, when we first committed to measuring our greenhouse gas emissions. We established our baseline the following year and have since focused on driving down emissions and improving energy efficiency across every part of the business. Throughout this time, we’ve been working to increase our accuracy of measurement and we fully account for emissions across both scopes 1 and 2, and some aspects of scope 3.

Our emissions are calculated through the Sustrax MX platform and independently audited and verified by Carbon Footprint Ltd. This year saw our market-based emissions fall below 800tCO2e for the first time, representing a reduction in emissions of over 61% since our baseline of 2016. This milestone reflects a decade of continued improvement, commitment to our values and industry leadership.

Accounting for our scope 1 and 2 emissions means we are fully compliant with SECR and helps us achieve targeted improvements in energy efficiency in compliance with ESOS. Measuring and reducing our emissions also forms part of our management standards ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 and contributes to our continued success in programmes like the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS). This has resulted in operational efficiency improvements and enhances our reputation as market leaders within the industry.

We are now looking to improve further with our scope 3 measurements and lower our emissions even further, as part of our Carbon Reduction Plan. This means examining and engaging with our entire value chain to reduce emissions upstream and downstream of our direct operations.

While we continue to make progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions across our sites, offices, and supply chain, we recognise that reaching Net Zero will require ongoing effort - and that some emissions are currently unavoidable. To address these, we’ve invested in a portfolio of internationally accredited carbon offset projects around the world. These projects not only help balance our remaining emissions but also reflect our broader business strategy and commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). From supporting access to quality housing and green jobs, to enhancing biodiversity and delivering social value, the positive impact we aim to create through our everyday work aligns with these goals. The projects below have been chosen to extend our impact across the SDGs.

Rebecca Pattison, Senior Environmental Consultant - Carbon Footprint Ltd said: "We are delighted to see Mulalley’s Net Zero journey continue, achieving a commendable reduction of 61% against the baseline year. Alongside their longstanding commitments to carbon neutrality through supporting vital carbon offsetting programmes across the world they continue to be a leader in construction."

Eamon O’Malley, CEO – Mulalley said: "We are very proud to reach this milestone of a decade of carbon neutrality. This represents ten years of company-wide efforts to reduce our carbon emissions and increase our positive impact on the environment. We are now looking to the future with our goal to reach Net Zero Carbon in our operations by 2050."

Our chosen offsetting projects:

- VPA (various) Zoba Debub Community Boreholes, in Eritrea
SDGs: 3, 5, 6, 13. This project utilises borehole technology to provide clean drinking water to hundreds of households in the Zoba Debub district of Eritrea. This not only provides reliable clean drinking water but offers a safer and more sustainable solution than the otherwise used firewood. This protects current forest habitats and ecosystems and increases local air quality.

- Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve Project, in Indonesia
SDGs: 13, 15. This project protects the Rimba Raya, or the ‘infinite forest’, of Borneo, Indonesia to ensure that it’s wildlife, unique species and ecosystems are protected. The palm oil and paper industry threaten the indigenous forests of Indonesia, with an area the size of Belgium lost each year. The Rimba Raya is home to the iconic Bornean Orangutan alongside other at-risk species – protecting this habitat ensures the carbon sequestration potential of the forest, protects biodiversity and enriches the local community.

- Larimar Wind Farm Project, in the Dominican Republic
SDGs: 7, 13. This wind energy project involves the construction of two wind farms in the Enriquillo region of the Dominican Republic. These wind farms have a total installed capacity of nearly 100MW, providing clean energy to the local area. The owner, EGE Haina, have also invested over $5million in social development in the areas of education, cultural, sanitary and sporting facilities.

- Karnataka Pavagada-II Solar Project by Avaada (150 MW), in India
SDGs: 7, 13. This project drives the generation of clean, renewable energy in India through the installation and operation of a 150MW solar PV park. The reduction of use of fossil fuels directly impacts the environmental impact of using power and the install, operation and maintenance of the project provides local secure jobs in the renewable sector.

- Soil Carbon Improvement Project through Grassland Management, in South Africa
SDGs: 1, 2, 6, 13, 15. This project focuses on the management of grazing areas in Drakensberg, South Africa – protecting the land and soil from degradation. The project provides training and opportunities for local herders and family owners to ensure the effective use of sustainable farming practices such as rotational grazing, smaller pastures and controlled burning to ensure the soil has time to recover and maintain its organic matter. This aids floods prevention, water conservation and the mineral content and the carbon sequestration abilities of the soil.

- Tree planting in the UK and Kenya
We have also contributed to tree planting efforts in the UK and Kenya with 20 trees being planted in each nation. This is part of wider schemes that aim to take advantage of the power of trees to remove carbon from our atmosphere while providing other vital ecosystem services.
