Environmental matters

Waste

In line with our Environmental Objectives Policy, we encourage recycling and waste minimisation, and follow WRAP guidance. We strive to improve our resource efficiency by working with our Clients and Supply Chain to optimise the use of raw materials and minimise the amount of waste sent to landfill. At present our waste carriers are recycling over 90% of the construction waste from our current project sites, and from Head Office, a significant step towards our goal of zero waste by 2020.

Water

We monitor our water use, and install reduction measures, including rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling on many of our projects. Our rainwater recycling continues with waterbutts on our sites. A recent example is the Atherton Leisure Centre, where greywater recycling was incorporated into the wc system to reduce the environmental impact and running cost of the building.

Materials

Our Sustainable Procurement Policy aims to ensure that all timber we use is from certified sources such as FSC or PEFC. We seek to prioritise the use of responsibly sourced material and material with recycled content in all our projects, aided by our in-house Sustainability team, who undertake reviews of our projects, including seeking good ratings in the Green Guide to Specification. We encourage and support our Supply Chain to strive to procure responsibly and to ensure they operate in a safe and environmentally responsible way, promote and develop sustainable solutions and best practices, following our Sustainability Policy.

Health and Wellbeing

We are Investors in People Gold standard certified. We are committed to our employees, and will continue to provide a safe and inspiring environment enabling them to develop their skills, and contribute to the growth of our business. The commitments to our people are in the areas of: Health and Safety, equality and diversity and learning and development, where we have written robust systems in place to ensure that this is done, as part of our sustainability policy. We undertake health checks for staff and sub-contractors on sites and in offices, and offer private healthcare and first aid training to staff. We are members of the British Safety Council, and require relevant staff to hold Construction Skills Certification Scheme qualifications, as this confirms they have undergone independent Health and Safety training We are also members of CHAS (Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme), who independently review our Health and Safety polices, and ensure our procedures are robust, and also that of our suppliers.
